Frequently Asked Questions

The type of trance used in hypnotherapy is very different from what we might see in ‘stage hypnosis.’

We all naturally go into and out of trance states many times throughout the day – for example, while driving, reading a good book, or even out for a walk. Have you ever had that scenario where you are driving somewhere and the next thing you realise is that you are 20 miles further down the road with no recollection of that space of time?

We experience changes in our conscious awareness in this relaxed state, almost as if we are daydreaming. The unconscious mind is more aware during this time and can focus on helpful suggestions and thoughts.

Trance is a natural and safe state to be in. Trance is not mind control, despite what you may have seen on television. It can not make you do anything you do not want to do, even cluck like a chicken!

Hypnosis, also known as ‘trance,’ is a very natural, relaxing state that can be induced by using guided relaxation techniques. It allows the mind to relax and then focus on useful thoughts and suggestions.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a modern psychotherapeutic approach that employs practical, structured, and well-researched strategies to assist people in making significant, positive changes in their lives in a relatively short amount of time.

Importantly, in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, therapists focus on the client’s goals (the solution) rather than the issue that brought them to seek help (the problem).

Unlike other types of hypnotherapy, Solution Focused Hypnotherapy follows a specific structure that combines several aspects of Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) with a knowledge of how the brain works, as well as the use of trance.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is also unique in that it does not require the therapist to delve into a client’s past, bringing back bad and harmful memories, as this is not deemed necessary in order to help the client formulate plans and best hopes for the future.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a type of hypnotherapy that focuses on the present and future rather than the past.

A Solution Focused Hypnotherapist will ask you to consider your ideal future by asking questions like “What would be better if the problem has improved?” or “What would be different?”

This makes your potential solutions more visible and gives you a goal to work toward.

Hypnosis reduces anxiety by very simply combining relaxation and visualisation. Allowing you to focus on the positive aspects of your life and encouraging a shift in perspective.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapists can also assist people who are having confidence and self-esteem issues by working collaboratively with them.
It can also help people cope better with physical issues like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and certain chronic pain conditions by addressing stress, low mood, anxiety (including panic attacks), and physical issues like OCD.

Specific phobias, such as a fear of spiders, water, flying, or public speaking, as well as painful memories and traumatic experiences, can be reduced.

Some people are often surprised by how ‘normal’ they feel while in a trance, fully aware of everything going on around them.

There is no right or wrong way to be in a trance, and different people have different experiences. The only thing they all have in common is that they feel wonderfully relaxed, which is a lovely sensation to experience.

We always begin by talking you through a relaxation process that will relax both your body and your mind. Then, once you’re in that state, we’ll simply talk to you about positive reinforcement in areas of your life where you’ve identified a need for assistance and ‘read you a story’. The story will be a metaphor that your subconscious mind will absorb and make use of where it knows is most appropriate.

All initial consultations are free for most conditions, confidential and without any obligation to continue. We will not ask you to re-live painful memories or disclose anything you feel uncomfortable talking about.

When you come and see us for the first time, we will have a discussion of how you would like us to help you, of the issues for which you are seeking assistance and how you would like things to change, including your goals and best hopes for the future. This could include a wide range of things, such as wanting to feel more relaxed or confident, to cope better with things in your life, or to overcome a phobia.

Goals may also include the desire to change certain behaviours, such as getting better sleep, developing healthier eating habits, or reducing that drinking habit and many other things for which hypnotherapy is beneficial.

It will also include gathering of general information such as your contact details, any history or conditions that you might feel are relevant, and other details that can help us assess how best we can help you.

We then have a discussion of how the brain works, how we experience emotions in the way that we do and how these can affect us and our habits and what we can do to change these. We will also include details about what trance is, and how it is a very normal and natural state, and what you can expect from your sessions.

You will also be provided with a relaxation recording to listen to, for you to use in between your sessions, which will help you relax, sleep better and reinforce the benefits of the hypnotherapy sessions.

Absolutely! We see many children having hypnotherapy sessions, typically from the age of 7, and we’re always amazed at how children just ‘get it’. It also usually takes far less sessions than an adult for a child to resolve their issues.

Teenagers also respond extremely well to hypnotherapy and many teenagers are struggling under significant pressure, anxiety and stress these days.

Simply put, it will not happen.

Unlike traditional therapies and counselling we don’t dwell on the past or keep going over and over painful memories or discuss problems in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy. We don’t even need to know details during the initial consultation.

Instead, we concentrate on your ideal future and encourage you to imagine how your life will be once you’ve made the changes you desire.

Hypnotherapy cannot completely change who you are or change habits and beliefs that you would never change.

Because hypnosis works with your mind, thoughts, feelings, and emotions, it can only enhance what you already have rather than creating a completely new person.

It will help you to become that best version of yourself.
